Dominican Republic History

Dominican Republic History (Wikipedia)

Dominican Republic Flag

The Dominican Republic is a country located in the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. It occupies the eastern five-eighths of the island, which it shares with the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that are shared by two sovereign states. The Dominican Republic is the second-largest Caribbean nation by area (after Cuba) at 48,671 square kilometers (18,792 sq mi), and third by population with approximately 10 million people, of which approximately three million live in the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo, the capital city.

Christopher Columbus landed on the island on December 5, 1492, which the native Taino people had inhabited since the 7th century. The colony of Santo Domingo became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, the oldest continuously inhabited city, and the first seat of the Spanish colonial rule in the New World. After more than three hundred years of Spanish rule the Dominican people declared independence in November 1821.

The Dominican Republic is the most visited destination in the Caribbean. The year-round golf courses are major attractions. A geographically diverse nation, the Dominican Republic is home to both the Caribbean's tallest mountain peak, Pico Duarte, and the Caribbean's largest lake and point of lowest elevation, Lake Enriquillo. The island has an average temperature of 26 °C (78.8 °F) and great climatic and biological diversity. The country is also the site of the first cathedral, castle, monastery, and fortress built in the Americas, located in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone, a World Heritage Site. Music and sport are of great importance in the Dominican culture, with Merengue and Bachata as the national dance and music, and baseball as the favorite sport.

Punta Cana History

Punta Cana History (Wikipedia)

Punta Cana is a resort town within the Punta Cana-Bavaro-Veron-Macao municipal district, in the municipality of Higüey, in La Altagracia Province, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic. The area has beaches and balnearios which face both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and it has been a popular tourist destination. The weather is very hot and humid, especially in late summer and autumn when the Northern Tropics receive their most direct sunlight.

The Punta Cana area has an estimated population of 50,000. Punta Cana is a popular tourist destination. The area is a key contributor to tourism in the Dominican Republic. As a beach destination, many of the popular excursions in Punta Cana are near the water. These activities include snorkeling, windsurfing, banana boat rides, speedboats, scuba diving, catamaran cruises, party boats, deep sea fishing, as well as swimming with dolphins and sharks and stingrays snorkeling. Visitors that prefer to see more of the Dominican country side, there are land based excursions such as safari tours, horse back riding and dune buggy. The land based excursions offer some of the most beautiful views that Punta Cana has to offer.

The Punta Cana International Airport is the primary airport. In 2014, Punta Cana received over 2.4 million passengers, making it the second busiest airport in the Caribbean.

Punta Cana is known for many luxury resorts. Because they are spaced far and few between, most of them are the all-inclusive types.

Dominican Republic Language

Dominican Republic Language

The official language spoken in the Dominican Republic is Spanish. However, dialects are spoken across the country. The local dialect of the Dominican Republic is called Dominican Spanish and has some African influences. Moreover, it has borrowed vocabularies from the Arawak language. English is spoken in most tourist areas, but you should try to learn a few phrases before you arrive in case you are in an area where little English is spoken. The peso is the unit of currency for the country.

  • Good morning = Buenos días

  • Good afternoon = Buenas tardes

  • Good evening = Buena noches

  • Good night = Buenas noches

  • It's a beautiful day = Es un hermoso día

  • How are you today? = Cómo estás hoy?

  • My name is Russ. = Mi nombre es Russ.

  • What is your name? = Cuál es su nombre?

  • One Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Nine Zero
Uno Dos Tres Cuatro Cinco Seis Siete Ocho Nueve Cero

  • What time is it? = Que hora es?

  • How much for this? = Cuánto por esto?

  • Where are the bathrooms? = Donde están los baños?

  • Which way to the beach? = Qué camino a la playa?

  • What time is dinner? = Qué hora es la cena?

  • One more beer please. = Una cerveza mas por favor.

  • One more pina colada please. = Una piña colada más por favor.

Dominican Republic Currency

The official currency of the country is the Dominican Peso (DOP). However, because Punta Cana is a hot spot for international tourism most shops, hotels, excursion companies and restaurants accept US dollars and Euros.

The value of the DOP typically hovers between 40 to 45 Pesos per US dollar.

Money Travel Tips

  • Try not to exchange your money into the largest bill (2,000) for many small businesses refuse to accept them. This is because the 2,000 pesos bill is the most forged bill in the Dominican Republic.

  • Try to keep your money in bills as much as you can. Loose change is spent faster and lost easier than bills.

  • Try to exchange your money into the smaller bills (50, 100, 200 and 500) for most places will claim they don’t have enough change to give back. This will force you either to walk away empty handed or to forfeit some of your change to the cashier.

Average salary in Dominican Republic is DOP 1,356,585 (US $31,769).

The average wage for a common laborer in the Dominican Republic is around 3,000 to 6,000 pesos ($61-$122 US Dollars) a month.

Working at one of the big hotels where the "new" minimum wage is $6,133RD pesos ($125 US Dollars) per month.
